Celeb Style Alert – Academy Awards Fashion Review

Did you watch the 86th Annual Academy Awards?

For film fans and fashion followers, Tinseltown’s award season is the equivalent to an avid sports fan’s regular game season – and the Academy Awards are pretty much the “Championship Game” of the year.

So, being a huge movie buff and style seeker, I was super excited about Sunday night’s awards – boy, do I love a red carpet!

As predicted, top acting nods went to Cate Blanchett in Woody Allen’s Blue Jasmine; first-time winner Matthew McConaughey took home the gold for his rousing performance in Dallas Buyers Club; Lupita Nyong’o won for her supporting role in 12 Years a Slave; and award-season favorite Jared Leto won for his impeccable performance as “Rayon” in Dallas Buyers Club. Best Director honors went to Alfonso Cuaron for Gravity, and the top award of the evening – Best Picture – went to 12 Years a Slave.

I had to narrow down my top style picks of the evening… It was really hard, you guys!  And if you’re gearing up for a special occasion take note – I’ve selected some celeb-worthy shoes to complete your look, without the high designer price.

Academy Award Fashion – My Best-Dressed Picks

There were so many wonderful looks on the red carpet, and two actresses from the evening really hit it out of the park.

Best Dressed Women

Lupita Nyong’o

One word – perfection. Lupita Nyong’o not only won the Academy Award on Sunday night, she also topped “Best Dressed” lists across the board. Her stunning Prada gown, in what she called, “Nairobi Blue,” stood out from the fashion pack. It was so light and airy, and looked so beautiful against her flawless complexion.

I also really loved how she accessorized – with a simple gold headband, bangle bracelet and geometric gold earrings that added a bit of edge. SO gorgeous!

The downside to all of the gorgeous long gowns on the red carpet – it’s hard to grab a pic of celebs’ shoes! J But if you plan to wear a pretty, pale shade like Nyong’o did for your next big night, take a look at these footwear picks!

This special occasion collection from Betsey Johnson is HOT on our website right now, and I’ve given you two striking styles to choose from. The Bells sandal has a very clean, streamlined look that’s perfect for any spring or mid-summer’s night out, while the Wish pump has the always-popular almond toe shape – a timeless and sophisticated look, indeed. Want to add a little whimsy? Both styles feature a splash of sparkles and a powder blue sole for a gown similar to Lupita’s, or for your wedding gown! You’ll definitely say, “I Do” to these!

Charlize Theron

I really don’t think this Academy Award winner has ever struck out in the style department. When it comes to red carpet fashion, stars often get snubbed by choosing a gown in black, but style critics all agreed – this floor-length Dior gown with illusion straps blew all old rules out of the water. Paired with that plunging neckline and full tiered skirt, Charlize’s gown was so fab, I can’t imagine it would’ve needed to be in any other color than black.

Nina Camden (Women’s)

Now, when you have a dress that brings the drama, there’s no need to go over the top with footwear… And that’s why the Camden by Nina is the perfect pick! It’s sleek yet stylish, with crisscrossed straps – and there’s just the right dose of sparkle, with its gorgeous glitter-adorned vamp.

Best Dressed Man

Joseph Gordon-Levitt

The dudes all looked dapper, including Best Actor and Supporting Actor winners Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto, who opted for cream-colored tuxedos. But my top pick of the night goes to the handsome Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who really took the phrase “Tailored to Perfection” to a new level. I love the classic Old Hollywood feel of his Calvin Klein tux – it looked like it truly was made for him.  And his sleek black dress oxfords provided the right finishing touch. So cute! 😉

A padded collar and plush footbed give you a generous dose of comfort, and a flexible, durable rubber sole makes it fit for the dance floor.

Best Dressed Couple

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie

When it comes to the red carpet, there’s one celeb couple that truly are the King and Queen of the ball – Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Besides both being super talented actors and producers (their production company is responsible for the Best Picture winner 12 Years a Slave), they always look great.

Check out Jolie’s glittering gown from designer Elie Saab – it’s sophisticated and sexy with its floor-length skirt, long, sheer sleeves and bevvy of sparkles in all the right places. Gorgeous! And Pitt rocked the perfect mix of classic and cool, with a tailored tux and a slicked back, rock-and-roll influenced ‘do.

If you’re attending a special event with your significant other, you need shoes that make you look and feel like a star…

Ok, so I had to pick this one for two reasons: the gorgeous champagne color would look stunning with a dress similar to Angelina’s… and because it’s called the Jolee!!
