Most people recycle everyday – old computer paper, plastic pop bottles, glass jars, used batteries – but there are some things that don’t commonly come up when separating trash from recyclable items.

One item that can be recycled that came as a surprise to me is the athletic shoe.  I know that most people out there probably donate lightly worn shoes to those in need, but did you know that even ratty old athletic shoes can be recycled and reused?

Nike Reuse-A-Shoe is a program that can take your old running shoes and turn them into ‘Nike Grind.’  This is then used at kid’s playgrounds and in certain athletic surfaces.  So far, 22,955,911 pairs of shoes have been donated to this cause.
